Experience of Delivery in Women with and without Antenatal Fear of Childbirth

Abstract: Late pregnant women with and without fear of childbirth were identified by means of a questionnaire. Their delivery experiences were estimated by means of interviews 3–4 days after parturition. Women with antenatal fear of delivery were found to run an increased risk of having a negative delivery experience and of possibly also finding difficulties in the attachment to their children in the immediate postnatal period.

“…The present research focussed on FOC, which is estimated to be a concern for as many as 33% of women [2], and of severe intensity in as many as 11-14% of pregnant women [4,5]. FOC is an important construct to understand especially because of its relationship to negative birth experiences and postnatal distress [11] and also its relationship to elective and emergency CSs, which can be both risky and often unnecessary compared to a vaginal birth [7].…”

“…Pregnancy-related factors, which bear a negative influence on the experience of childbirth, are unplanned pregnancies, previously terminated pregnancies (Salmon & Drew 1992), and fear of childbirth in late pregnancy (Areskog et al 1983). Fear of childbirth is correlated to complications during childbirth (Sjögren & Thomassen 1997), and to difficulties in the attachment to the child in the immediate postnatal period (Areskog et al 1983).…”
