Experience in Full Load Testing Natural Gas Centrifugal Compressors for Rotordynamics Improvements

Abstract: During full load shop tests under natural gas, two multistage centrifugal compressors exhibited subsynchronous vibrations. Both of them are low flow, high pressure, high rotational speed compressors, and are fitted with tilting pad bearings, and dry gas seals. A rotating stall problem was firstly eliminated by a modification of the diffuser geometry. Then, aerodynamic excitations caused the rotors to operate at their stability limit, and high vibration levels were observed at the first natural frequency. A com… Show more

“…In 1990s, Memmott [18,19] employed a shunt injection method to solve problems of subsynchronous vibrations of high-parameter centrifugal compressors. Shunt injection has proven to be dynamically beneficial in many cases [20], but there have been some cases in which they were not satisfactory. In 1999, Soto and Childs [21] experimentally studied the effect of shunt injection on the dynamic characteristics of a 20-tooth labyrinth seal by removing the fourth tooth.…”

“…Reports by Zeidan et al [31], Sorokes et al [25] and Gelin et al [8] show that a damper seal can be used to increase the compressor stability. This component has high damping coefficient, but it can also have high stiffness, which can affect the critical speed position and the equipment's unbalance response, as reported by Noronha et al [23], Baldassarre et al [2,3].…”

“…This paper highlighted on reliable rotor dynamic design as a whole, ranging from systematic R&D efforts to high-demand testing [2]. The literature shows several examples of high sub synchronous vibrations that made necessary changes to the machine [3][4][5]. This work focuses on emphasizing some of the latest findings on rotating machine common defects.…”
