Experience, engagement and social interaction at a steam locomotive multimodal interactive museum exhibit

Abstract: This paper describes the on-going study of an interactive multimodal museum exhibit about a steampowered locomotive at the Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow, UK. We examine the role of multimodal interaction relating to effects on (1) visitors' experience of the exhibit, (2) engagement with the subject matter, (3) social interaction and (4) engagement with the exhibit itself. We discuss key questions of our study, a set of initial findings, reflections and future work.

“…In addition, both are large exhibits with controllers located at least 2 metres apart from each other. At the Glen Douglas, visitors can simulate running a steam locomotive, adding coal and water to the boiler while regulating the steam pressure (see also [13]). At the Fire Fighter exhibit, visitors extinguish fires using a hose at the top of a ladder, and by turning a wheel next to the ladder, position the ladder in front of the fires as they appear in the windows of different buildings.…”

“…All installations discussed in this section are in the Riverside Transport Museum in Glasgow, which our group currently collaborate with in the context of a Ph.D. project (see [Clarke and Hornecker 2013]). An initial survey of candidate interactives for further detailed study within this Ph.D. had us notice several systems that varied in success of spatio-contextual embedding.…”
