“…Armour et al, in a nine-month Australian study, reported a retention rate of 78.7% (from 239 to 188 patients) [28]. A Swedish study reported an 83.1% retention rate in 12 months (from 77 to 64 patients) [29]. We note that the main causes of dropout among patients were related to the improvement in glycaemic control in the first 6 months of monitoring, lack of financial incentive and lack of time to attend appointments at the pharmacy.…”

“…For once, diabetes is a chronic disease, and longitudinal studies of therapeutic interventions for diabetes have all concluded a slow deterioration of metabolic control as an effect of time, especially for patients in control conditions who were not under intensive therapeutic efforts [51,52]. In an earlier randomized controlled trial we conducted on a similar population it was evident that the control group followed the general trend for persons with diabetes, whereas the study population had managed to reverse the deterioration of their HbA 1c values [35]. Thus, halting the trend of deterioration, or indeed, reversing it, is a truly positive result in a diabetes educational program aiming to improve long-term outcomes.…”

“…The program has been evaluated in an RCT with results indicating a significant difference between the intervention and control groups 24 months after baseline [35]. After having proved efficacious, the program was disseminated to several pharmacies throughout Sweden for a larger-scale trial period of 2 years; there were 14 locations with 18 pharmacists involved in this second phase of the study.…”
