Experience and Outcome of Children with Severe Acute Malnutrition Using Locally Prepared Therapeutic Diet

Abstract: The present study highlights the integral role of locally prepared therapeutic diet (starter F-75 and F-100) besides standardized care provided at Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) to combat malnutrition which is a major scourge in the developing world. To sustain the benefits and prevent relapse, there is a need to integrate the services at NRC with the community-based therapeutic care to deliver continuum of care from facility to door step and vice versa.

“…The scienti c explanation for this might be due to discontinuation of breastfeeding and inappropriate complementary feeding practices as children's age increases. The present study was consistent with the study done in Debre Markos and Finote Selam hospitals, and Northern India (20,28). However, this study is contrary to studies done in Malawi, Wolisso St. Luke catholic hospital, Gamo-Gofa Zone and Shebedido woreda OTP center (30,(32)(33)(34).…”

“…However, the recovery rate for the present study was lower than studies done India, Wolisso St. Luke catholic hospital and Ghana (28)(29)(30). The higher recovery rate in St. Luke catholic hospital might be due to greater sample size (855).…”

“…This may be scientifically explained by the discontinuation of breastfeeding and the introduction of inappropriate complementary feeding practices as the age of the child increases. The present study is consistent with studies performed at the Debre Markos and Finote Selam hospitals and in northern India [22,24]. However, this study contrasts with studies conducted at Wolisso St. Luke Catholic Hospital, in the Gamo-Gofa Zone, and at the Shebedino Woreda Outpatient Treatment Program Center [21,25,27,41].…”

“…However, it was longer Table 2. Distribution of routine medications, special medications, supplements, and therapeutic feeding for patients with severe acute malnutrition cases admitted to the therapeutic feeding unit of Yekatit [17,19,24,37,38]. The relatively short nutritional recovery times found in India and Zambia may be due to socioeconomic status, as well as treatment and caring practices, and the longer recovery time in the present study compared to other settings in Ethiopia might be because in this study setting, complicated cases may be referred, potentially prolonging the recovery time.…”
