Expected peak ground acceleration in Uttarakhand Himalaya, India region from a deterministic hazard model

Abstract: A method of seismic zonation based on the deterministic modeling of rupture planes is presented. Finite rupture planes along identified lineaments are modeled in the Uttarakhand Himalaya based on the semi empirical technique of Midorikawa (Tectonophysics 218:287-295, 1993). The expected peak ground acceleration thus estimated from this technique is divided into different zones similar to zones proposed by the Bureau of Indian standard, BIS (Indian standards code of practice for earthquake-resistant design of s… Show more

“…The semi empirical modeling technique gives a chance to model a finite rupture plane for simulation of strong ground motion. This technique has been used by Joshi and Patel [17], Joshi and Mohan [19] for preparing of seismic hazard map. The technique of preparation of seismic hazard map given by Joshi and Patel [17] and Joshi and Mohan [19] lacks representation of probability associated with the observed peak ground acceleration at a different location.…”

“…Joshi and Patel [17] have formulated a method of seismic zonation, which is based on the deterministic modeling of finite ruptures along identified probable fault in an area using semi empirical approach. This method of seismic zonation based on semi empirical modeling of rupture plane has been used for preparing seismic hazard map of Doon valley [17], Assam valley [18], and the Uttarakhand Himalaya, India [19]. The technique of hazard zonation is based on the semi empirical simulation technique which in turn is dependent on the attenuation relation applicable in the region under study.…”

“…The PGA values obtained for Western Himalaya varied between 0.15g and 0.3g, which is much lower than those given in earthquake code BIS 1893BIS -2002, and also in the present study. Joshi and Mohan's (2009) method of estimating hazard involved the modeling of rupture planes along identified lineaments in Uttarakhand. As the Southward dipping North Almora Thrust was considered in its entirety, and not segmented, it gave PGA values much higher than anywhere else, of the order of 0.55g, and that too South and West of MFT, i.e.…”
