Slowly but surely, open and distance learning (ODL) programmes are being regarded as one of the most practical ways that universities across the world are increasingly adopting in order to increase access to university education. Likewise, Mzuzu University (MZUNI) set up the Centre for Open and Distance Learning (CODL) to oversee the running of these programmes in 2011. In this study, we adopted the Transactional Distance Theory (Moore, 1997) to investigate the modes of instructional systems, benefits or opportunities, and the challenges associated with the delivery of ODL programmes at MZUNI. By selfadministering a questionnaire to 350 ODL students and 9 Heads of Department in the Faculty of Education whose programmes are offered through ODL, we found that instructions are mostly delivered to students through print-based instructional materials. The major benefits noted include increased access to quality higher education, affordable tuition fees, and flexibility in payment of fees. However, we established some challenges which need to be addressed by the University which include, delayed feedback of assignments and release of end of semester examination results, absence of information for courses of study, poor communication between the Centre and departments, and poor remuneration for lecturers.

This study aims to answer questions about the importance and utilization of wetland provisioning ecosystem services (ES) in the disturbed southernmost provinces of Thailand, calling for the need for sustainable wetland management. Generally, natural resources management in the unrest area has been neglected because security-related policies have usually received higher priority. The study surveyed a sample of 328 households to explore the types and importance of provisioning wetland ES that have value to the local people. The statistics used to analyze data are percentage, mean, standard deviation, and calculation of the value of provisioning ES. Quantitative data were presented to a participatory workshop of 22 stakeholders to explore guidelines for wetland management. The results indicate that wetland plays a vital role in the livelihood of the local community by providing a variety of provisioning ES. Nine of the 13 ES addressed in the study were perceived as important to very important by the local people. Based on the guidelines provided by the stakeholders, an initial strategy has been formulated in the study.

<span lang="EN-US">This study investigated technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) practices during the current COVID-19 pandemic and examined factors influencing students’ perceptions of effective online learning. This study gathered the primary data from 90 university students from four study programs via the online questionnaire. Using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical tool for data analysis, this study found that students’ perceptions of their teachers’ teaching performance in the fully online programs are not significantly different across four study programs. This finding implies that regardless of their study programs, the students had expected that teachers should pay attention to some vital aspects in online learning: using the same learning management system (LMS) for all study programs, and preparing designing practical online modules, taking care of the organization of teaching inputs that promote students’ critical thinking, delivering various teaching inputs and methods, intensifying teachers’ presence in monitoring students’ learning progress, motivating students to learn, and promoting teacher-student mutual respect through effective communication. This study also revealed that teachers play a pivotal role in achieving effective online learning during the pandemic.</span>
