Expectancies, Values, and Costs of Innovating Identified by Canadian Innovators: A Motivational Basis for Supporting Innovation Talent Development

Abstract: Current studies in innovation are often siloed to specific disciplines, precluding a generalizable understanding useful to understanding the factors that promote and hinder individual motivation to innovate. This study integrates analysis of 30 interviews and 500 surveys of Canadian innovators from a variety of disciplines as a means of understanding the avenues that education could use to develop innovation talent. The results of this study point to the overstated role of rewards as drivers of developing inno… Show more

“…It can be defined variously and tends to include problem-solving processes (Cramond & Fairweather, 2013), executing novel ideas to create societal value (Soleas, 2018a) and applied creativity . The capacity to refine existing ideas and challenge existing ideas is a very important and thankfully human process drawing intense interest from a range of disciplines including psychology (e.g., Carr, Kendal, & Flynn, 2016), business (e.g., De Clercq & Pereira, 2019), and education (e.g., Soleas, 2020), among many others. The importance, variety, and outcomes of writing, the nebulous state of the literature remains siloed among different disciplines, and there has yet to be a cogent amalgamation of the research elucidating what motivates innovators in one place.…”

“…This characteristic demonstrates unequivocally that creativity is a culture fueled by collaborative effort (Owusu-Agyeman, 2019). Teamwork is the main factor that frequently appears in all research regarding the implementation of innovation inside an organisation (Davydova & Dorozhkin, 2016;Banerjee & Srivastava, 2017;Feixas et al, 2018;Zhang et al, 2018;Vick & Nagano, 2018;Owusu-Agyeman, 2019;Soleas & Bolden, 2020). Team members must trust and respect one another, comprehend one another's viewpoints and styles, manage conflicts successfully, and be receptive to new ideas or inquiries that result in innovative ideas (Banerjee & Srivastava, 2017).…”

“…The literature offers ideas about what motivates innovation, but there has been very little open-ended investigation directly asking innovators what factors motivated them to reach their future goals. This alludes to a need to further investigate individual innovators' motives as a precursor to a wider investigation of the primary drivers of the aspiration to innovate (e.g., Soleas, 2020). Whereas the absence of consideration of values is almost a given when choosing to focus on the environment rather than approaches and interventions, the paucity of studying costs of innovation in the literature is symptomatic of the primarily positive approach taken by studies, rather than a framework like EVC which also looks at detractive factors like costs.…”

“…In interpreting the findings, it is clear that environmental considerations are not the only factors that impact innovating. An approach considering only environmental factors underestimates the literature findings that innate and personality traits and the strategies and approaches of teachers and other supervisory figures can have on promoting innovation (Soleas, 2020). Rather, innate factors and interpersonal interactions are greatly important and should be considered in tandem with environmental considerations.…”
