Expect the Unexpected: Leveraging the Human-Robot Ecosystem to Handle Unexpected Robot Failures

Abstract: Unexpected robot failures are inevitable. We propose to leverage socio-technical relations within the human-robot ecosystem to support adaptable strategies for handling unexpected failures. The Theory of Graceful Extensibility is used to understand how characteristics of the ecosystem can influence its ability to respond to unexpected events. By expanding our perspective from Human-Robot Interaction to the Human-Robot Ecosystem, adaptable failure-handling strategies are identified, alongside technical, social … Show more

“…In addition, one core feature of failure of function approaches is their multi-methods use, combining a broad range of data with different data modalities and sampling contexts, ranging from bio-/chemical analysis, visual inspection, material tests, simulation studies, behavioral analysis, participatory observation, and qualitative interviews (Booker et al, 2022 ). Also, psychological models of perception, decision making, and attitudes have been widely applied for failure analysis (e.g., human-robot interactions: Honig and Oron-Gilad, 2018 , 2021 ). This multi-method approach makes failure of function research particularly suitable for the investigation of motor functioning, an interdisciplinary field of research from the ground.…”

“…The MARLIN method relies on the stress and strain model and the theory of graceful extensibility, two acknowledged concepts of resilience engineering that are currently being implemented practically [30,[36][37][38][39]. Differently, MARLIN merges these two concepts, giving a new practical application to this combination.…”

“…With this research, the authors contribute to the warehouse management literature by proposing a method to manage disruptions in today's complex cyber socio-technical systems. As mentioned, the MARLIN method relies on the stress and strain model and the theory of graceful extensibility, which are currently being implemented practically [30,[36][37][38][39]. Differently, MARLIN merges these two concepts, providing a new practical application to this combination.…”
