Expansion of Field Testing and Application of New Hybrid Drill Bit

Abstract: Improvements in drilling performance in key applications around the world continue to focus on reducing vibrations of the system consisting of the drill bit, bottomhole assembly (BHA) and drillstring. These vibrations can take the form of whirl, stick-slip, bit bounce or combinations of these, leading to drilling inefficiencies. Many efforts are under way to control and manage these vibrations and develop tools that can withstand the higher vibrations seen in today's drilling environment.Introduction of the mo… Show more

“…[3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Fortunately, in 2009, a hybrid bit, which combines the structural features and the working principles of fix-cutter polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit and roller cone bit, was developed by one service company as one of the successful cases. [10][11][12][13] As far back as 1930, the American Floyd L. Scott and his staff had invented the first hybrid bit which combines a fishtail and a roller cone bit. 14 And then, in 1980s, both the Smith 15 and Reed Company 16 put forward technical patents on hybrid PDC (polycrystalline diamond composite) cutter-roller cone drill bit.…”

“…On the other hand, velocity, acceleration, and kinetic equations of the hybrid bit cutter are established based on the composite kinematics model, based on which the dynamic rock-breaking process of the hybrid bit is researched by utilizing the numerical simulation method. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] Structural characteristics and working principle of the hybrid bit…”
