Expanding the Study of International Relations: The French Connection

Abstract: The study of international relations has been dominated by scholars working in the United States and has concentrated on questions that have been important to the U.S. as it emerged as the leading international power after 1945. These tendencies have limited the questions asked, the concepts generated, and the perspectives relevant to theory building. “…Apontava-se que as RIs eram uma "invenção" estadunidense com tendências patrióticas e nacionalistas (Neal e Hamlett,1969;Olson, 1972;Welch 1972 apud Kristensen, 2013); sendo que a mais famosa destas afirmações é a de Stanley Hoffmann (1977), a qual argumenta que as RIs seriam uma "ciência social estadunidense" nascida no pós-Segunda Guerra, dominada por estadunidenses e por questões que a política externa estadunidense demandava 4 .
