Expanding the notion of ‘ownership’ in participatory research involving teachers and researchers

Abstract: This article provides a conceptual discussion of 'ownership' in various forms of participatory research. The discussion is grounded in our experiences from three research projects in science education. We seek to understand how and why ownership may be distributed between teachers and researchers at different stages in the research process. Looking at our projects in retrospect, we see that ownership was differently distributed at the initial stages. Then ownership distribution followed a similar pathway, as t… Show more

“…We consider such a participatory approach to be most beneficial when engaging with underserved groups in particular. Indeed, co-designing activities and tools with the participants is useful and desirable when it comes to the implementation of effective community initiatives, as also demonstrated in the literature [62]. However, on the other hand, there is a risk of bias in research findings, in the sense that they are positively skewed, because of an overly positive attitude of participants toward a project.…”

“…One option to solve this is participatory research, which has the potential for broad screening and effective data collection (Strasser et al 2019 ). Participatory research originated in healthcare but has lately transferred into other disciplines, including sustainability questions (Lang et al 2012 ) and teaching situations (Areljung et al 2021 ). Its foundation is that researchers receive help from volunteering participants, such as students or the public (Gibson et al 2017 ).…”
