Expanding social mobile games beyond the device screen

Abstract: Emerging pervasive games use sensors, graphics and networking technologies to provide immersive game experiences integrated with the real world. Existing pervasive games commonly rely on a device screen for providing game-related information, while overlooking opportunities to include new types of contextual interactions like jumping, a punching gesture, or even voice to be used as game inputs. We present the design of Spellbound, a physical mobile team-based game, to help contribute to our understanding of ho… Show more

“…Existing pervasive games typically rely on the device screen to provide game-related information and ignore opportunities to include new types of contextual interactions such as jumping, punching gestures, or even voice as game input. Sra and Schmandt [ 41 ] presented the design of Spellbound , a team-based physical mobile game, to help us understand how to design pervasive games that foster a spirit of togetherness. Sra and Schmandt [ 41 ] also briefly discuss how solidarity and playfulness transform physical movements into an ideal activity.…”

“…Due to the need for a corresponding infrastructure, short-range proximity sensors are not ideal for implementing pervasive games, hence GPS and Wi-Fi form the basis of most recent location-aware games (Magerkurth et al, 2005). Emerging pervasive games use sensors, graphics and networking technologies to provide immersive game experiences integrated with the real world (Sra and Schmandt, 2015).…”

“…Research on mobile video games has typically focused on emergent forms of play, their sociocultural dimensions, or the political economy of mobile app and game development and changing business practices and revenue models. Some research has examined the convergence among online social media, location-based services, and mobile apps such as games that incorporate real-world geography and the player’s physical location through global positioning systems of mobile phones, or even simply games that feature social media integration and allow players to share scores or communicate with one another (Hjorth and Richardson, 2014; Silva and Hjorth, 2009; Sra and Schmandt, 2015). Mobile games have also been presented as evidence of ongoing ‘erosions of once distinct categories such as “hardcore” versus “casual” gamer’ (Hjorth, 2011).…”
