The potential contribution of food-producing animals or foods to public health risks by ESBL and/or AmpCproducing bacteria is related to specific plasmid-mediated ESBL and/or AmpC genes encoded by a number of organisms. The predominant ESBL families encountered are CTX-M, TEM, and SHV; the predominant AmpCfamily is CMY. The most common genes associated with this resistance in animals are bla CTX-M-1 (the most commonly identified ESBL), and bla CTX-M-14 , followed by bla and bla Among the genes encoding AmpC-type β-lactamases, bla CMY-2 is the most common.The bacterial species most commonly identified with these genes are Escherichia coli and non-typhoidal Salmonella. ESBL/AmpC transmission is mainly driven by integrons, insertion sequences, transposons and plasmids, some of which are homologous in isolates from both food-production animals and humans. Cefotaxime is used as the drug of choice for optimum detection of bla ESBL and/or bla AmpC genes. The preferred method for isolation of ESBL-and/or AmpC-producers is screening on selective agar preceded by selective enrichment in a broth.The establishment of risk factors for occurrence of ESBL/AmpC-producing bacteria is particularly complicated by the data unavailability or lack of its accuracy. The use of antimicrobials is a risk factor for the selection and spread of resistant clones, resistance genes and plasmids. Since most ESBL-and AmpC-producing strains carry additional resistances to other commonly-used veterinary drugs, generic antimicrobial use is a risk factor for ESBL/AmpC and it is not restricted specifically to the use of cephalosporins. An additional risk factor is extensive trade of animals in EU MS. There are no data on the comparative efficiency of individual control options in reducing public health risks caused by ESBL and/or AmpC-producing bacteria related to food-producing animals. Prioritisation is complex, but it is considered that a highly effective control option would be to stop all uses of cephalosporins/systemically active 3 rd /4 th generation cephalosporins, or to restrict their use (use only allowed under specific circumstances). As co-resistance is an important issue, it is also of high priority to decrease the total antimicrobial use in animal production in the EU. Plasmids pRSB113 and pRSB115 were recovered from an activated sludge bacterial community of a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Germany. Both plasmids carry the same bla GES-5 carbapenemase gene, located within two distinct class 1 integrons. These plasmids have different backbones, belong to different incompatibility groups, and could replicate in both Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli.

Environmental Aeromonas sp. isolates resistant to ceftazidime were recovered during an environmental survey performed with water samples from the Seine River, in Paris, France, in November 2009. Selected isolates were identified by sequencing of the 16S rRNA and rpoB genes. PCR and cloning experiments were used to identify broad-spectrum-␤-lactamase-encoding genes and their genetic context. Clavulanic acid-inhibited extended-spectrum-␤-lactamase (ESBL) genes were identified in 71% of the Aeromonas sp. isolates. A variety of ESBL genes were detected, including bla VEB-1a , bla SHV-12 , bla PER-1 , bla PER-6 , bla TLA-2 , and bla GES-7 , suggesting an aquatic reservoir of those ESBL genes. Moreover, the repeated elements and different insertion sequences were identified in association with the bla PER-6 and the bla VEB-1a genes, respectively, indicating a wide diversity of mobilization events, making Aeromonas spp. a vehicle for ESBL dissemination.Bacteria with intrinsic or acquired resistance to antibiotics are commonly found in aquatic environments, where Pseudomonas, Serratia, and Aeromonas are commonly identified (2,17). Recent studies reported that the bla TEM-1 gene was detected in most of the Gram-negative isolates resistant to ampicillin recovered from lakes in Brazil or from wastewater treatment plants in China (24,40). Furthermore, several studies identified extended-spectrum ␤-lactamases (ESBLs) from water samples. For instance, the clinically relevant ESBL PER-1 was identified from Aeromonas media in a Swiss lake (32), and CTX-M-14 and TEM-52 were detected in Escherichia coli recovered from a South Korean river (21). Besides, nonclinically relevant Ambler class A ␤-lactamases TLA-2 and PER-6 were identified from uncultured bacteria (43,12) and Aeromonas allosaccharophila isolates, respectively (15).In addition, other studies reported on the identification of carbapenem-hydrolyzing ␤-lactamases in the environment, such as the Ambler class A ␤-lactamases IMI-2 and BIC-1 from Enterobacter asburiae (1, 5) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (14), respectively; the Ambler class B ␤-lactamase VIM-2 from Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes (41); and the class D ␤-lactamase OXA-23 from Acinetobacter baumannii (13).The present study was designed to evaluate the diversity of broad-spectrum ␤-lactam resistance determinants in Aeromonas species in water samples from the Seine River, Paris, France. The working hypothesis was that Aeromonas spp. could be an important reservoir for ESBLs. MATERIALS AND METHODSBacterial strains and plasmids.
