Exotic model of the cosmic ray spectrum

Abstract: A detailed study of the cores of extensive air showers (EAS) at mountain level (Tien-Shan 690 g/cm2) was carried out in the hybrid experiment HADRON. An analysis of the fine structure of the EAS spectrum in the energy region1015 - 1017 (knee) showed that there are two breaks in the spectrum. Along with the previously known break at an energy of 3 · 1015 eV, a change in the slope of the EAS spectrum is observed at an energy slightly below 1017 eV. In addition the use of a large X-ray emulsion chamber (XREC) as … Show more

“…As such the particles of strange quark matter [53,54] might be proper candidate since their maximal charge Z ∼ 1000 could make compatible existence of a single cut-off rigidity threshold at R c 0.1 PV with continuation of the cosmic ray spectrum above the 3 PeV border due to the common Fermi acceleration mechanism. In this connection it should be mentioned that the results gained up to date at Tien Shan do not exclude their interpretation by a lost of stability of the hypothetical particles of strange quark matter at their interaction with the air nuclei [55][56][57].…”
