Exosomes: Insights from Retinoblastoma and Other Eye Cancers

Abstract: Exosomes, considered as cell debris or garbage bags, have been later characterized as nanometer-sized extracellular double-membrane lipid bilayer bio-vesicles secreted by the fusion of vesicular bodies with the plasma membrane. The constituents and the rate of exosomes formation differ in different pathophysiological conditions. Exosomes are also observed and studied in different parts of the eye, like the retina, cornea, aqueous, and vitreous humor. Tear fluid consists of exosomes that are shown to regulate v… Show more

“…microRNA (miRNA, miR)-494 is known to be overexpressed in tumors and is involved in angiogenesis by transferring to vascular endothelial cells via exosomes [ 19 , 20 ]. In contrast, in cancer cells, miR-494 has been reported to target MYC and PGC-1α [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ].…”

“…Exosomes are vesicles about 30-150 nm in diameter, which can be secreted by a variety of cells [16], including immune cells [17], cancer cells [18], and stem cells [19] and so on. They are distributed in almost all body fluids, including blood [20], urine [21], tears [22], semen [23], cerebrospinal fluid [24], and so on. Exosomal generation process involves the formation of ILVs and the fusion of MVBs with plasma membrane [25].…”
