Exosomes: emerging biomarkers unveiling cellular mysteries—a narrative review

Ijeoma Evangeline Umeche,
Mathew Folaranmi Olaniyan

Abstract: Exosomes have gained recognition as potential diagnostic and prognostic markers due to their stability and disease-specific cargos. Exosomes, once dismissed as cellular debris, are now acknowledged as crucial mediators of intercellular communications and disease. These nanosized vesicles transport dynamic cargos consisting of bioactive molecules, including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, enabling cells to exchange information and influence each other’s behavior. This review delves into the multifaceted ro… Show more

“…Recent research has brought to light the significant role of exosomes—small extracellular vesicles secreted by cells-in cellular communication. These vesicles, containing a variety of biomolecules like proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, are crucial in various physiological and pathological processes [ 9 , 10 ]. Their influence extends to diverse conditions, including cancer and neurodegenerative diseases [ 11 , 12 ].…”
