Exosomal MicroRNAs as Potential Biomarkers of Hepatic Injury and Kidney Disease in Glycogen Storage Disease Type Ia Patients

Abstract: Glycogen storage disease type Ia (GSDIa) is an inherited metabolic disorder caused by mutations in the enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase-α (G6Pase-α). Affected individuals develop renal and liver complications, including the development of hepatocellular adenoma/carcinoma and kidney failure. The purpose of this study was to identify potential biomarkers of the evolution of the disease in GSDIa patients. To this end, we analyzed the expression of exosomal microRNAs (Exo-miRs) in the plasma exosomes of 45 patients ag… Show more

“…A great research effort in recent years has focused on the analysis of EV cargo to identify new predictors of disease development/evolution and response to therapy in several clinical settings [55,62,97,[116][117][118][119][120][121], including in patients affected by adult arthritides [56,86,122]. However, EV-miR expression and potential as biomarkers in JIA have begun to be analyzed only in the last year.…”

“…In neonatology, miRNAs from cord blood showed a very low correlation with maternal blood miRNAs expression but instead they appeared to be powerful early biomarkers of child health ( Cretoiu et al, 2016 ; Dypas et al, 2020 ). Circulating miRNAs are also considered good diagnostic tools for example in celiac disease and its treatment ( Felli et al, 2022 ) or to detect the evolution of liver diseases ( Calkins et al, 2020 ; Resaz et al, 2021 ; Nagura et al, 2022 ).…”

“…The release of exosomes is regulated by specific stimuli, and their cargo reflects the producing cell [7]. Indeed, exosomes are defined as the bioprint of the cell of origin and, thus, the study of their content allows to gain accurate information of primary tumor features [8][9][10]. Indeed, exosomes represent a source for both diagnostic and prognostic markers in several human diseases [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15].…”

Indeed, exosomes represent a source for both diagnostic and prognostic markers in several human diseases [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. To gain insight into the characteristics of NB for improving diagnosis and treatment, we performed proteomic analysis of the exosomes released in the blood of NB patients.…”
