Exoplanets and SETI

Abstract: The discovery of exoplanets has both focused and expanded the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The consideration of Earth as an exoplanet, the knowledge of the orbital parameters of individual exoplanets, and our new understanding of the prevalence of exoplanets throughout the galaxy have all altered the search strategies of communication SETI efforts, by inspiring new "Schelling points" (i.e. optimal search strategies for beacons). Future efforts to characterize individual planets photometrically and… Show more

“…Astronomical events have been suggested for coordinating the timing of transmissions and observations. A number of schemes involve exoplanets, ephemeris and transits (Wright, 2017). One scheme uses exoplanet ephemeris to forecast events such as the conjunction of two exoplanets along a line of sight from the Earth, aiming to intercept a transmission from the far planet towards the planet in between (Siemion et al ., 2014).…”

“…The inverse is true for a sender, as mentioned at the end of the previous subsection. Considering the simplicities and merits both for the senders and receivers, this signaling scheme (or similar ones) might be actually prevailing as a tacit adjustment in the strategy space (Schelling 1960;Wright 2018).…”

“…Since the pioneering work by Drake (1961), significant efforts have been made for SETI experiments, but no definite signal has been detected so far (see e.g., Tarter et al 2001;Siemion et al 2013;Harp et al 2016). 1 This might be partly due to the fact that we have explored an extremely small fraction in the multi-dimensional phase space for SETI experiments, under the restrictions of available observational facilities and computational resources (Tarter et al 2010;Wright et al 2018). For example, Tarter et al (2010) figuratively claimed that we have examined only a glass of water randomly sampled from Earth's oceans to find a fish (see also Wright et al 2018).…”

“…Other kinds of signature that can provides measurable evidences of the use of technology (technosignatures), like for example anthropic settlement or radio and luminous signals, are also suggested in order to recognize the presence of intelligent alien civilization. A review of them is given in Wright [76].…”
