Exogenously Applied Trehalose Augments Cadmium Stress Tolerance and Yield of Mung Bean (Vigna radiata L.) Grown in Soil and Hydroponic Systems through Reducing Cd Uptake and Enhancing Photosynthetic Efficiency and Antioxidant Defense Systems

Abstract: Cadmium (Cd) toxicity is a serious environmental issue causing a significant reduction in crop growth and productivity globally. Trehalose (Tre) has emerged as an important reducing sugar that can reduce the adverse impacts of different abiotic stresses. Therefore, the present investigation was performed to determine the key role of Tre in alleviating Cd stress in the mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) crop. The study was comprised of different treatments of cadmium (0, 10, 20 mg kg−1 soil) and Tre (0, 15 and 30 mM)… Show more

“…Heavy metals (HMs) are a severe threat to global food production. Their concentration in agricultural soil is rapidly increasing due to anthropogenic activities ( Hassan et al, 2019 ; Chattha et al, 2021 ; Imran et al, 2021a ; Rehman et al, 2022 ). The role of MT to regulate plants grown under different HMs is well explored ( Hasan et al, 2015 ); nonetheless, MT-mediated growth regulation largely depends on MT application rate, heavy metal concentration, and plant species ( Table 5 ).…”

“…The heavy metal cadmium (Cd) is toxic to most organisms, including plants and humans (Ding et al, 2018). Cd is easily absorbed by plant roots, causing severe structural and functional changes, inhibiting seed germination and root growth, and Cd stress also increases ROS production (Farid et al, 2013;Ali et al, 2014;Rehman et al, 2022). HD-ZIP genes and their upstream microRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in Cd accumulation and tolerance.…”

“…Drought stress also reduces photosynthesis by reducing cell turgor and plants’ access to CO 2 owing to the closure of stomata ( Jaleel et al, 2007 ). One of the major detriments of DS is the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage the structural integrity of membranes, proteins, and DNA ( Ahanger and Agarwal, 2017 ; Sultan et al, 2021 ; Qari et al, 2022 ; Rehman et al, 2022 ). However, plants have developed different mechanisms to reduce the harmful effects of ROS to protect the stability of cellular structures and improve the yield under DS ( Ahanger and Ahmad, 2019 ).…”
