Exoenzymes and metabolites related to the nematicidal effect of rhizobacteria on Xiphinema index Thorne & Allen

Abstract: This is the first report of exoenzymes and metabolites associated with nematicidal effect of rhizobacteria on X. index, which can be a possible alternative for control of this plant-parasitic nematode.

“…This review focuses on B. velezensis, which includes a variety of previously reported strains, namely, B. amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum FZB42 [22], B. amyloliquefaciens FR203A [24], B. amyloliquefaciens SQR9 [25], B. amyloliquefaciens NJN-6 [26], B. amyloliquefaciens SQRT3 [27], B. methylotrophicus KACC 13105 T [22], B. velezensis CR-502 T and CR-14b [16], and B. subtilis GB03 [28]. Based on rpoB gene analysis and other analyses, these taxa are synonymous with B. velezensis and are each capable of suppressing pathogens.…”

“…The nematicidal effect exerted by strain FZB42 has been attributed to plantazolicin, a novel compound encoded by the pzn gene cluster [45]. Culture filtrates of B. amyloliquefaciens FR203A have also been used as biocontrol agents for control of the nematode Xiphinema index, a pest of grape crops in Chile [24].…”

“…Extracellular phytase, for instance, is considered as a plant growth promoting factor for improvement of phosphorus-use efficiency by plants (Shao et al, 2015 ). Bacillus amyloliquefaciens has also been used as biocontrol of numerous plant diseases caused by soil-borne microorganisms (Islam et al, 2016 ; Tan et al, 2016 ), post-harvest pathogens (Chen et al, 2016 ), insects (Aziz et al, 2016 ), nematodes (Castaneda-Alvarez et al, 2016 ), and aphids (Gadhave and Gange, 2016 ). Moreover, B. amyloliquefaciens has been reported to directly antagonize plant pathogens by competing for essential nutrients (Wu et al, 2016 ), producing antibiotic compounds (Srivastava et al, 2016 ) and inducing systemic acquired resistance (Ng et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Although the ethyl acetate fraction showed low nematicidal activity (20%), a possible active compound in the ethyl acetate fraction is likely to be responsible for a small portion of the nematicidal activity of the HK160 isolate, as the ethyl acetate fraction showed nematicidal activity at high concentrations exceeding 2,500 μg/ml (data not shown). Extracellular enzymes, including serine proteases, chitinases, and collagenases, have been described as important factors that can degrade the structural constituents of nematode surfaces or eggshells [22]. Extracellular proteases have been intensively studied in relation to antagonistic fungi and bacteria against pathogenic nematodes [23].…”
