The differential cross sections for neutron-proton charge-exchange scattering have been measured for mcident neutron momenta between 8 and 29 GeV/c and for four-momentum transfers I tl between 0.002 and 1.0 (GeV/c) 2. A neutron beam with a broad momentum spectrum was scattered from a hquid hydrogen target. The momenta and scattering angles of the forward-scattered protons were measured by a spark-chamber magnet spectrometer. The flight times and scattering angles of the recoil neutrons were measured by a bank of thick scintillation counters. The effic~encles of the neutron counters were determined in a separate measurement. Absolute normalization of the data was obtained from a measurement of the diffracnon dissociation of neutrons from carbon nuclei. Differentml cross sections, based on-23 000 events, are presented for 9 different momenta. The shape of the differential cross sections and the momentum dependence are examined m detail. * We emphasize that even ff there is a significant momentum dependence in the diffraction dissoeiation cross section, it will have very tittle effect on our absolute normalization between 18 and 26 GeV/c, neat the peak in the neutron spectrum.

The existence and significance of the right-signature J = 0 fixed pole in vector scattering such as photoproduction and Compton scattering off protons and pions is investigated in the context of gauge-invariant models involving compositeness which have been developed in a previous paper. It is shown that the existence of such a fixed pole depends on the elementarity of the photon and not on the compositeness of the pion or proton target or on the assumption that the charged constituent of the target has no structure. Assuming the p meson Iies on a Regge trajectory, we show that within the context of these models a J = 0 fixed pole does not arise in p-meson photoproduction.

The shape of the np charge-exchange forward spike implies striking properties for the amplitudes. These are shown to indicate the existence of a polelike singularity located near the physical threshold (u =4mZ) for the u channel Jp-Zn. If this singularity is due to the exchange of a single particle, it must be an isospin-zero, G parity +, scalar meson, and its coupling to the nucleons has to be equal to that of the n ; one is thus led naturally to the o model a s giving a simple interpretation of the very special properties of the amplitudes.
