Existence of an immunoglobulin G component of naturally occurring HLA class I antibodies that are not directed against self‐antigens in human serum

Abstract: We compared the frequency of IgG type of HLA class I antibodies between patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and healthy controls, using a highly sensitive FlowPRA method. Sixteen of 130 normal healthy males and two of 10 normal females without a history of pregnancy (none had ever been transfused) possessed HLA class I antibodies. In SLE, male, but not female patients, showed a significant increase in the frequency of the antibodies, as compared with the corresponding controls. The antibodies did … Show more

“…The progress made so far on the discovery of natural HLA Abs in humans projects that, in the future, a greater number and incidence of natural allo-HLA IgG Abs will be recorded in healthy nonalloimmunized males. A number of investigators provided different explanations for the presence of natural HLA Abs (7,11,12,43). Some contended that they are the result of a polyclonal, continuous immune response against exogenous Ags (5, 6, 8-12).…”

“…Consequently, it may contain HLA antibodies because several allo-HLA antibodies are known to occur naturally in the sera of both men (nonalloimmunized) and women. [9][10][11][12][13] MoralesBuenrostro et al 11 demonstrated the specificities and incidence of these allo-HLA-I Abs in nonalloimmunized males. Neither the origin nor cause of anti-HLA Abs occurring in healthy individuals has been established.…”

“…We adopted a highly sensitive FlowPRA method to survey the amount of PRA. 10) Positive PRA was defined as ≥ 10% of PRA class I or class II. Variables evaluated: Perioperative parameters, including donor and recipient characteristics, were obtained.…”
