An axion cosmic string is known to be a chiral superconductor when the axion couples to an electrically charged fermion. After the QCD phase transition, a QCD axion string is attached by N domain walls. We would like to elucidate the fate of massless fermions on a global string after domain walls attached not only in the axion model but also in general models having string-wall composites. We investigate the Dirac equation under various string-wall composite backgrounds both in the axion(-like) models and in the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 supersymmetry inspired Abelian-Higgs models. We give an answer to the elementary question of whether massless fermions exist, and if so, where they are localized. The answer depends on fermion/boson masses in the models, and the massless fermion can be localized either on the string, on one of the domain walls, or in one of the vacua. We find analytic solutions for the fermion zero mode function by which we prove the existence of the massless fermion on the string-wall composites. We also show supercurrents flowing along the string-wall composites and anomalous electric currents flowing in from outside.

Design and construction of MuTe: a hybrid Muon Telescope to study Colombian volcanoes

We present a hybrid Muon Telescope, MuTe, designed and built for imaging active Colombian volcanoes. The MuTe has a resolution of tens of meters, low power consumption, robustness and transportability making it suitable for using in difficult access zones where active volcanoes usually are. The main feature of MuTe is the implementation of a hybrid detection technique combining two scintillation panels for particle tracking and a Water Cherenkov Detector for filtering background signals due to the electromagnetic component of extended air showers and multiple particle events. MuTe incorporates particle-identification techniques for reducing the background noise sources and a discrimination of fake events by a picosecond Time-of-Flight system. We also describe the mechanical behavior of the MuTe during typical tremors and wind conditions at the observation place, as well as the frontend electronics design and power consumption.

Exact analytic solutions of static, stable, nonplanar Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) domain wall junctions are obtained in extended Abelian-Higgs models in (D þ 1)-dimensional spacetime. For specific choice of mass parameters, the Lagrangian is invariant under the symmetric group S Dþ1 of degree D þ 1 spontaneously broken down to S D in vacua, admitting S Dþ1 =S D domain wall junctions. In D ¼ 2, there are three vacua and three domain walls meeting at a junction point, in which the conventional topological charges Y and Z exist for the BPS domain wall junctions and the BPS domain walls, respectively, as known before. In D ¼ 3, there are four vacua, six domain walls, four junction lines on which three domain walls meet, and one junction point on which all the six domain walls meet. We define a new topological charge X for the junction point in addition to the conventional topological charges Y and Z. In general dimensions, we find that the configuration expressed in the D-dimensional real space is dual to a regular D-simplex in the D-dimensional internal space and that a d-dimensional subsimplex of the regular D-simplex corresponds to a (D − d)-dimensional intersection. Topological charges are generalized to the level-d wall charge W d for the d-dimensional subsimplexes.
