Exhaled nitric oxide measurements: Correction equation to compare hand-held device to stationary analyzer

Abstract: FE(NO) values measured by NIOX-MINO were systematically higher than those obtained by NIOX (47.1ppb, IC 95% 35.2-59.1 and 36.9ppb, IC 95% 25.0-49.0, respectively). There was a significant correlation (r=0.998, p<0.001) between FE(NO) measured by the two analyzers and the following conversion equation was calculated as: FE(NO(NIOX))=-1.656(SE=0.61)+0.808(SE=0.009)x FE(NO(NIOX-MINO)) DISCUSSION: FE(NO) values measured by the portable nitric oxide analyzer are reliable and strongly correlated with values obtained… Show more

“…[44][45][46] When considering the mean values recorded in each study, differences between studies ranged from 0.3 to 9 ppb. NIOX MINO was found to give largely similar results to the Niox chemiluminescent device in five studies 39,41,43,45,46 but gave higher FeNO readings in two other studies.…”

“…42,44 l Correlation coefficients ranged from 0.73 to 0.998. l Bland-Altman analyses were not reported in a consistent way, with some studies using proportions, some using absolute values and some using log values. It is not clear whether log transformation is appropriate as results varied across studies and were apparently conflicting on this point.…”

“…In this respect, the recently introduced hand-held and relatively inexpensive NO electrochemical analyzer (MINO®) seems an asset, promoting widespread use of eNO in both clinical and research settings [139]. Exhaled NO values measured with the MINO® were found to be reproducible and in agreement with the stationary units [139][140][141]. Conclusively, most technical issues surrounding eNO measurements appear to be resolved or manageable and the remaining question is the clinical relevance (and disease specificity) of this biomarker [142].…”

“…The reliability of these portable devices has only been assessed in a handful of small studies and data from exhaled NO studies suggest readings differ between handheld and stationary devices [18]. We undertook a systematic literature review to assess the diagnostic accuracy of nNO measurement, highlighting the different analysers and respiratory manoeuvres currently used.…”
