Exergoeconomic and environmental analyses of CO2/NH3 cascade refrigeration systems equipped with different types of flash tank intercoolers

Abstract: Research Highlights• CO 2 /NH 3 cascade refrigeration cycles with flash intercoolers are investigated.• Exergoeconomic factors of components are determined to assess their relative significances.• An environmental analysis is applied to determine the penalty cost of GHG emission.• The effects of operating parameters on COP, exergy efficiency and total cost rate are investigated.• An optimization is applied based on the maximum COP and the minimum total cost rate. 1© 2016 This manuscript version is made availab… Show more

“…In 1993, a CO 2 transcritical refrigeration system in automotive air conditioning was built and tested [3]. As time goes on, CO 2 transcritical refrigeration technology is wildly applied in vehicles [4], water heaters [5,6], heat pumps [6,7] and low temperature cascade refrigeration systems [8], and so on.…”

“…Due to the increasing environmental concerns, it is necessary to consider the environmental impacts while designing energy systems [65]. In the present study, the annual carbon dioxide emission (CDE) is estimated to identify the environmental effect, which can be formulated as [15]:…”

“…BASE has been extensively studied and is suitable for implementation in practical applications. 34,35,44 As illustrated in Figure 1A, BASE consists of HTC compressor, high-pressure heat exchanger, HTC throttle valve, cascade heat exchanger (CHX), LTC throttle valve, and LTC evaporator. The high-pressure heat exchanger is the condenser, because the discharge pressure of HTC compressor is below the critical pressure of R744, and the high-pressure heat exchanger mainly releases latent heat, as shown in Figure 1B.…”

“…32,33 However, operation of CRS can be more economical compared with two-stage compression system. 34 Although CO 2 has advantages in low-temperature applications, such as good flow characteristics and unit volume cooling capacity, 35 R744/R744 CRS also has a disadvantage in efficiency when compared with the existing CRSs such as R744/R134a, 36 which is used in supermarkets, R744/R290, 37 and R744/R717. 38 But it can be approached by using the performance improvement method summarized above.…”
