Exergetic Aspects of Hydrogen Energy Systems—The Case Study of a Fuel Cell Bus

Abstract: Electrifying transportation is a promising approach to alleviate climate change issues arising from increased emissions. This study examines a system for the production of hydrogen using renewable energy sources as well as its use in buses. The electricity requirements for the production of hydrogen through the electrolysis of water, are covered by renewable energy sources. Fuel cells are being used to utilize hydrogen to power the bus. Exergy analysis for the system is carried out. Based on a steady-state mod… Show more

“…One of the most eco-friendly and least pollutant renewable source as well, known is hydrogen. In recent years, the studies on fuel cell-based energy systems have led liquefied hydrogen fuel to be considered as an important alternative fuel with feasible outcomes [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15], but the disadvantages that have been waiting to be solved still remain [16][17][18][19][20][21]. Hydrogen should be produced because it does not exist in nature by itself.…”

“…Technical information on H 2 FC buses and their use in demonstration projects are also available [11][12][13][14][15]. Exergetic evaluation of H 2 FC buses have also been conducted [16]. Work on effects of light weighting has also been performed for automotive applications [17,18] as well as dealing with the challenges for modelling and integrating of light weighting into concept design [19].…”

“…In this context, the results of the review developed above are suitable and significant for a wide spectrum of literature-oriented approaches toward RES utility among various HES. Among these, the electrifying transportation sector, which is a promising approach to alleviating climate change issues arising from increased emissions, is noteworthy [71]. In this study, the examined HES can produce hydrogen, using RES, for the transportation sector (in buses).…”
