Exercise training prevents the attenuation of anesthetic pre‐conditioning‐mediated cardioprotection in diet‐induced obese rats

Abstract: The results indicate that exercise training can prevent the attenuation of anesthetic cardioprotection in obesity. Preventing the attenuation of this strategy may be associated with reduced basal oxidative stress and normalized ROS-mediated AMPK pathway, but the causal relationship remains to be determined.

“…These effects of exercise were related to upregulation of pro-survival signalling pathways, increase in kinase phosphorylation, decreased levels of phosphates and increased resistance of mitochondrial permeability transition pore-opening. [64][65][66] Since no impact of 4-week exercise training was found on glucose, cholesterol, insulin, fat mass or body mass, 66 restoration of preconditioning occur independent of changes in traditional CVD risk factors. Although more work is required, these preliminary studies highlight the ability of exercise training (in obese animals) to restore attenuated cardioprotection afforded by classic ischaemic preconditioning.…”

“…() have demonstrated that exercise training partially restores, while tandem training and caloric limitation completely preserves ischaemic preconditioning in aged rats (Abete et al ., ). Exercise has also been shown to restore cardioprotective signalling and preconditioning in obese mice, independently of associated co‐morbidities (Pons et al ., ; Li et al ., ). Whether these exercise effects involve sarcolemmal modulation is presently unclear.…”

“…Interestingly, exercise therapy preserves the preconditioning effect of both ischemia and anesthetic administration in senescent and obese animals. 113,122 The relationship between exercise training and preconditioning has led investigators to seek out shared mechanisms of organ protection. For instance - NOS expression and ROS are known to play prominent roles in PC.…”
