Exercise training in chronic heart failure: effects on pro-inflammatory markers

Abstract: Background: Acute bouts of exercise have been shown to induce inflammatory cytokine activation and peripheral hypoxia in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). In this study, we set out to investigate the impact of chronic exercise training on pro-inflammatory cytokines and markers of endothelial damage. Methods and results: We measured tumor necrosis factor a (TNFa), its soluble TNF-receptors 1 and 2, interleukin 6 (IL-6), soluble eselectin, soluble intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM) and sCD14 in 1… Show more

“…[189][190][191] Plasma sCD14 concentration has also been linked to the pathophysiology of other inflammatory disease states. [192][193][194][195] To our knowledge, only 1 group has examined the effect of exercise training on sCD14. 192 Exercise training did not alter sCD14; however, these researchers employed a modest subject number (n = 18) and only 8 weeks of exercise.…”

“…In addition to improving functional capacity and survival, other evidence has shown positive results of this therapy, such as an increasing in circulating endothelial progenitor cells 53 , anti-inflammatory effects and effects on the endothelium, and changing in levels of interleukin-1β 54 , -6 54,55 , -10 56 , tumor necrosis factor-α and its receptors 1 and 2 and C-reactive protein 56 , inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) 54 , soluble intracellular adhesion molecule (sICAM) 55 , adiponectin 57,58 , brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) 59 and others (Fig. 2).…”

“…Similar home-based activity programs have targeted healthy populations as well as a variety of clinical populations such as those with heart failure, cancer, sporadic inclusion body myositis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, and outcomes associated with various inflammatory responses. 12,13,17 To date, there have been no published investigations that incorporate a homebased exercise approach for PLWHA.…”
