Exercise prescription in the management of rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: Background: Over the last few years, the types of exercises prescribed for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have changed. There is also increasing knowledge on the physical status and physical activity levels of these patients. This article aims to give an overview of the physical status, physical activity levels and appropriate exercise prescription for patients with RA.

“…These points, for the arm case, correspond to the shoulder and the hand, respectively, whereas for the leg they refer to the hip and the foot. I = (I x , I y ) and E = (E x , L y ) are the x and y coordinates of both points in the corresponding limb, whose length is defined as the distance L defined in equation (3). Yet, there are some exercises in which the performance depends on the angle formed by the extremity and the body torso, like in the shoulder or hip extension exercises (see Figure 8).…”

“…Among adults with other chronic inflammatory diseases, a traditional model of exercise prescription has been moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT; e.g. 30–60 min of moderate-intensity continuous endurance-type exercise such as swimming, cycling or running performed 3–5 times per week) [12], but a growing body of evidence indicates that high-intensity interval training (HIIT; e.g. 0.5–4 min bouts of vigorous exercise interspersed by periods of passive or active recovery) is a more time-efficient exercise strategy, eliciting similar or even superior cardio-metabolic adaptations compared to MICT, at least when compared on a work-matched basis [1316].…”

“…Due to the associated disability and cost incurred through treatment, RA affects patients economically. [4] Unemployment is a concern as it impacts the patient's ability to afford the treatment aiding in the management of their condition. [4] Of those who participated, 65.71% spent five or more hours sitting or reclining on a typical day.…”
