Exercise preferences and associations between fitness parameters, physical activity, and quality of life in high-grade glioma patients

Abstract: Recruitment rate was similar to a previous study in HGG populations, but study completion rate was lower. Most exercise counseling and programming preferences were similar to previous brain cancer patients. Assessing aerobic fitness to VO was not feasible. Aerobic fitness and PA were positively associated with QOL.

“…Between 16 and 88% participants were meeting PA guidelines (mean = 34.2%; median = 31.1%) (Table 2 ). Studies defined the guidelines in one of two ways: 1) 150 min of moderate physical activity or 75 min of vigorous physical activity per week [ 53 , 54 , 58 , 65 73 ], or 2) 150 min of moderate-strenuous PA per week (i.e., an average of 60 min of strenuous activity or 150 min of moderate activity) [ 36 , 49 , 50 , 59 , 61 , 64 , 74 ]. The mean months since diagnosis ranged from 14.9 to 139.2.…”

“…He also improved 'Global Health Status/QOL' by 8.4 points and 'Physical functioning' by 6.7 points. Though it does not reach a delta score of ten points or more, which is considered to being clinically relevant [47], it does indicate a potential difference from baseline, which is compelling to other studies [40,41,42,43]. He also reported a decrease in 'Social functioning'.…”

“…This suggests that patient finds it hard to commit to anything else during their medical treatment. Also, the majority of participants in both studies preferred to exercise at home as opposed to a hospital or community-based fitness center [42,45]. In contrast to these findings, three feasibility studies conclude that it was feasible for patients with glioma to participate in exercising during treatment at the hospital if supervised by rehabilitation professionals [24,40,46].…”
