“…The nutcracker syndrome, caused by the trapping of the left renal vein between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery, which may cause the development of intrarenal or periureteric varices and post-exertional non-glomerular hematuria [8], was excluded in our patients. Having verified the rapid resolution of hematuria after exercise, according to others [1,2,6], we found no reason for further urological examinations and believed there would be no harm in the resumption of full activity. We believe that the most likely cause was an exercise-induced bladder trauma.…”

“…Until now, the cause-effect relationship between exercise and hematuria has been postulated on the basis of the personal history of the patients or inferred by studies on groups of athletes [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8]. Our report shows that a simple test may help to establish the diagnosis in a given subject.…”

“…Meanwhile, numerous research groups have confirmed this observation (Ernst et al 1988;Gehrmann 1966;Gilligan et al 1943;Hornbostel et al 1975;Siegel et al 1979;Ubels et al 1999;Yoshimura et al 1980). Top-class endurance athletes do train more than 20 h per week.…”

“…The prevalence of running-induced hematuria was about 20-25%. 1 According to literature, there are several estimated reasons for running-induced hematuria: footstrike hemolysis, increased glomerular permeability, renal ischemia, nutcracker syndrome, and their combination. 2 Especially, the pathogenesis of running-induced macroscopic hematuria was previously thought to be of glomerular origin.…”
