Abstract:Myogenic contraction of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in resistance arteries and arterioles plays a critical role in regulating peripheral resistance. Ion channels expressed in VSMCs control ion influx or efflux from the plasma membrane and endoplasmic reticulum to regulate membrane potential, which contributes to the regulation of vascular tone. With the depolarization of VSMC membranes, an elevation of intracellular calcium ion (Ca 2+) concentration is mediated by voltagegated Ca 2+ channels and can t… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
