Exercise and Changes in Health Status in Patients With Ankylosing Spondylitis

Abstract: Unsupervised recreational exercise improves pain and stiffness, and back exercise improves pain and function in patients with AS, but these effects differ with the duration of AS. Health status is improved when patients perform recreational exercise at least 30 minutes per day and back exercises at least 5 days per week. Arch Intern Med. 2000;160:2969-2975

“…Additionally, Uhrin et al 17 discussed in their paper that daily exercises without supervision did not show any relation with changes in pain, stiffness or quality of life, as we also demonstrated here in these two last variables.…”

“…Carbon et al 12 and Uhrin et al 17 demonstrated that physical training promotes a beneficial effect in flexibility and wideness of spinal movement due to release of analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect mediators. Additionally, Uhrin et al 17 discussed in their paper that daily exercises without supervision did not show any relation with changes in pain, stiffness or quality of life, as we also demonstrated here in these two last variables.…”

“…The Lim study found a significant improvement in VAS in the treatment group [19]. Uhrin, et al concluded that exercise without supervision work to reduce pain and stiffness, back exercises improve pain level and function and the exercises should be done at least 5 days a week for 30 minutes to maintain the health status [20]. In our study, VAS values we evaluated during activity, nighttime and rest showed significant showed increase in function and decrease in disease activity.…”

“…Most cohorts reported thus far have included patients with AS with rather long disease durations (15-30 years) (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20). Interestingly, when comparing these studies, the frequencies of clinical manifestations were not different in GESPIC patients with AS with a symptom duration of Յ5 years, except for 2 manifestations: uveitis was found in 21% of GESPIC patients but in 22-61% of patients with longstanding AS (16)(17)(18)(19), and IBD was present in only 2.6% of GESPIC patients but in 8-12% of patients with longstanding AS (16)(17)(18).…”

“…Studies in AS have usually involved patients with longstanding disease (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20). The goal of the German Spondyloarthritis Inception Cohort (GESPIC) is to study prospectively the disease course of patients with early axial SpA and to identify predictors of outcome.…”
