The virtual-bremsstrahlung yields in proton-proton scattering, pp ! ppe 1 e 2 , below the pion threshold were measured. The leptonic-angle dependence of the experimentally determined cross section is exploited in order to extract the nucleon-nucleon response functions in the timelike region. All six response functions are compared to the predictions of a microscopic, fully relativistic nucleonnucleon model, as well as a model based on a low-energy-theorem expansion.
