Exclusion-Proneness in Borderline Personality Disorder Inpatients Impairs Alliance in Mentalization-Based Group Therapy

Abstract: Interpersonal sensitivity, particularly threat of potential exclusion, is a critical condition in borderline personality disorder (BPD) which impairs patients’ social adjustment. Current evidence-based treatments include group components, such as mentalization-based group therapy (MBT-G), in order to improve interpersonal functioning. These treatments additionally focus on the therapeutic alliance since it was discovered to be a robust predictor of treatment outcome. However, alliance is a multidimensional fac… Show more

“…A positive correlation was found between BPD symptom severity, rejection sensitivity and subjective unpleasantness of the Cyberball game. These findings are compatible with previous Cyberball studies in patients with BPD (Renneberg et al, 2012;Domsalla et al, 2014;Euler et al, 2018), corroborating the finding that rejection hypersensitivity is a core feature of BPD (Staebler et al, 2011a,b;Bungert et al, 2015). Contrary to expectations, however, performance in the AAT was unaffected by prior social exclusion.…”

“…The NTS was administered to participants retrospectively after the MRI session was completed according to how they felt after the inclusion and exclusion conditions. A subset ( n = 23 BPD patients and n = 28 HC participants) of the data is also presented in Euler et al (2018), where a compound measure consisting of the overall mean index of the NTS was computed and was found to correlate with other behavioral data from the treatment within the BPD group.…”

“…Impairments in mentalizing thus appear important for understanding deficits in interpersonal functioning in patients with BPD (Choi-Kain & Gunderson, 2008). For instance, the elevated sensitivity to interpersonal rejection found in patients with BPD is considered a failure of adequately mentalizing others' intentions (Euler et al, 2018;. In line with this view, empirical evidence suggests that a low mentalizing capacity is associated with interpersonal problems (Berenson et al, 2018;De Meulemeester, Lowyck, Vermote, Verhaest, & Luyten, 2017).…”
