Excitonic recombination processes in spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gases

Abstract: We report the observation of Coulomb interaction effects on the photoluminescence ͑PL͒ spectra of twodimensional electron systems close to the ϭ1 quantum Hall state. Systematic measurements of the polarized PL spectrum as a function of the separation between the two-dimensional electron gas ͑2DEG͒ and the photoexcited valence-band hole allow us to identify the recombination mechanisms. These studies demonstrate the formation of bound states between the photoexcited valence-band hole and the ϭ1 2DEG. Usually th… Show more

“…One of the anomalies 1-11 revealed in the magnetophotoluminescence ͑MPL͒ experiments performed on the twodimensional electron gas formed in semiconductor heterostructures ͓single heterojunctions and single quantum wells ͑QW's͔͒ was the presence in the spectra of some redshift discontinuities 4,7,10,11 at the filling factors ϭ1 and 2. The theoretical model proposed for the case of the Ϫ polarization 2,4 shows that the magnitude of the redshift discontinuity in the energy that appears when the magnetic field sweeps through these filling factors will be proportional to the difference between the Hartree-Fock energy (E HF ) of the hole formed in the conduction band ͑CB͒ after the recombination and the binding energy of the exciton formed before the recombination (E EX ), and it will scale as (ͱB) with magnetic field.…”
