A Systematic Review of Robotics Research in Support of In-Home Care for Older Adults

The aging population is growing at an unprecedented rate globally and robotics-enabled solutions are being developed to provide better independent living for older adults. In this study, we report the results from a systematic review of the state-of-the-art in home robotics research for caring for older adults. This review aims to address two questions: (1) What research is being done towards integrating robotics for caring for older adults? (2) What are the research and technology challenges that robots are facing in the home? Sixty-three papers have been identified and studied in this review by following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Common themes that are consistent across the reviewed papers are distinguished and consolidated as follows: (1) Ambient assisted living, where smart home environments and physical support tools are studied; (2) Robot ecosystem, where robotic devices are used to provide various services; (3) Social interaction, where the social isolation problem has been targeted. We also summarize the results of similar literature reviews we came across during our search. The results of this study present the current research trends and technologies used in each category. The challenges and limitations of robotics applications are also identified. Suggestions for accelerating the deployment of robots at home for providing older adults with independent care in the home are presented based on the results and insights from this study.

In order to fuse measurements from multiple sensors mounted on a mobile robot, it is needed to express them in a common reference system through their relative spatial transformations. In this paper, we present a method to estimate the full 6DoF extrinsic calibration parameters of multiple heterogeneous sensors (Lidars, Depth and RGB cameras) suitable for automatic execution on a mobile robot. Our method computes the 2D calibration parameters (x, y, yaw) through a motion-based approach, while for the remaining 3 parameters (z, pitch, roll) it requires the observation of the ground plane for a short period of time. What set this proposal apart from others is that: i) all calibration parameters are initialized in closed form, and ii) the scale ambiguity inherent to motion estimation from a monocular camera is explicitly handled, enabling the combination of these sensors and metric ones (Lidars, stereo rigs, etc.) within the same optimization framework. We provide a formal definition of the problem, as well as of the contributed method, for which a C++ implementation has been made publicly available. The suitability of the method has been assessed in simulation an with real data from indoor and outdoor scenarios. Finally, improvements over state-of-the-art motion-based calibration proposals are shown through experimental evaluation.

ResumenEn el contexto de un robot de servicio o asistencial, y en relación a su interacción con un usuario, este trabajo presenta un sistema que permite al robot ofrecer y llevar a cabo partidas de juegos de mesa. El sistema propuesto, que busca ampliar el abanico de actividades que el robot puede compartir con el usuario, se centra en ofrecer una experiencia lo más similar posible a una partida tradicional entre dos personas. Para ello, el juego se proyecta sobre una mesa mediante un pequeño proyector montado sobre el robot, y un sistema de percepción visual es empleado para detectar los movimientos del usuario. El sistema propuesto es especialmente interesante para robots asistenciales en entornos residenciales con personas mayores, permitiendo al usuario desarrollar diferentes actividades beneficiosas para su salud (memoria, reflejos, coordinación, etc.). Para validar el sistema propuesto, se presenta un caso práctico con un robot real en un entorno de laboratorio.Palabras clave: HRI, interacción robot-usuario, juegos de mesa, transformación proyectiva, ROS
