ExCITE Project: A Review of Forty-Two Months of Robotic Telepresence Technology Evolution

Abstract: This article reports on the EU project ExCITE with specific focus on the technical development of the telepresence platform over a period of 42 months. The aim of the project was to assess the robustness and validity of the mobile robotic telepresence (MRP) system Giraff as a means to support elderly people and to foster their social interaction and participation. Embracing the idea of user-centered product refinement, the robot was tested over long periods of time in real homes. As such, the system developmen… Show more

“…Sample robots extracted from the papers reviewed for this study. From left to right: Giraff [4], Hobbit [5], Matilda [6,7], Nao [8][9][10][11], iGo [12,13]. Various supports for older adults including telemonitoring, social interaction, and physical support are provided by these robotics systems.…”

“…For the indoor experimental evaluation, we used the Giraff mobile robot [23], [24] equipped with an odometer (by integrating wheel encoders for a differential drive configuration), an Hokuyo UTW-30LX 2D laser scanner and an uEye UI-1240SE-M-GL monocular camera. The laser scanner is mounted in parallel to the ground, while the camera is pointing downwards with an incidence angle of about 40°, as depicted in Fig.…”

“…Conscientes de esta realidad, la robótica asistencial se ha propuesto como una alternativa y solución para el cuidado de las personas mayores en sus propios hogares. Diversos son los proyectos europeos, como Excite [6], Teresa [8] o GiraffPlus [3], que proponen la fusión de entornos domóticos con plataformas móviles capaces de ofrecer diversos servicios a los usuarios [5,4].…”
