Neutron elastic-scattering cross sections of elemental chromium are measured from 4.5 - 10 MeV in steps of MeV and at scattering angles distributed between and . Concurrently cross sections for the inelastic neutron-excitation of the yrast (1.434 MeV) level in are determined. The experimental results are combined with lower-energy values previously reported from this group and with results from the literature to form an extensive scattering database which is interpreted in the context of spherical-optical and coupled-channels models. The physical implications of the measurements and models are discussed including; deformation, coupling, dispersive and asymmetry effects.

“…According to our measurements, at En = 14,7 MeV the cross section ratio for Pb2~ 2n) Pb 2~ and Pb~~ n') Pb 2~ is 21, while the ratio predicted by the statistical model is greater than 300. Aceording to the measurements of STELSON et al [22] as well as PEARL-STEIN and WIr~EOLD [23], the excitation of low lying collective levels is considerable also ata neutron energy of En > 10 MeV and does not vary strongly with increasing neutron energy. The peaks corresponding to these levels appear significant in the spectrum of scattered neutrons in a broad region of mass number.…”

The (n, 2n) cross sections were measured for the nuclei N 14, pa, CalS, Sc4£ MnS~, NiSS, Cu6~, ZneS, Zn66, SeSZ, RbSS, RbST, ysa, Zra0, Mog.~, Snn2, Sm1~4 at ah excess energy 3 MeV above threshold. In addition, the (n, 2n) cross sections for the nuclei Zn s4, Zn 7~ Ga ea, Ga 71, As 75, Mo 1~176 Pb 2~ as well as the cross section of the process Pb ~~ (n, n') Pb 2~4m were determined at 14,7 MeV bombardirtg neutron energy. At 3 MeV excess energy a strong N-Z dependence has been found in the (n, 2n) cross sections, valid for a broad region of tteutron numbers which can be accounted for by the influence of direct inelastic scattering leading to low lying levels of the target rmcleus. An empirical formula is given for calculating (n, 2n) cross sections.
