Excess Enthalpy HE of Binary Mixtures Containing Alkanes, Ethanol and Ethyl‐Tert. Butyl Ether (ETBE)

Abstract: The excess enthalpies of all possible binary mixtures of n‐heptane, isooctane (2,2,4‐trimethylpentane), ETBE (ethyl‐tert. butyl ether) and ethanol have been measured at 298.15 K and 313.15 K and atmospheric pressure using a quasi‐isothermal flow calorimeter. The experimental excess enthalpies HE and published excess heat capacities CEP and excess volumes VE are used to test the applicability of the ERAS (Extended Real Associated Solution)‐model.

“…However, the excess enthalpy of (ETBE + n-heptane) was studied by Mier et al (12) For this system at T = 298.15 K and x ≈ 0.5, the results of Mier et al (12) are about 40 J · mol −1 larger than our results. More recently, Domańska and Malanowski (13) used the excess volume data for (ETBE + nC6) and (ETBE + nC8) with the Prigogine-Flory-Patterson theory to determine the interchange parameters for these systems and predict the H E m .…”

“…(7,8) Although MTBE is currently produced on a large scale, interest in other ethers as efficient substitutes continues to increase steadily and, correspondingly, the interest in thermodynamic properties of mixtures with ethers. In the present paper experimental results of H E m and V E m at T = 298.15 K are reported for binary mixtures of an alkanol (ethanol, 1-butanol, or iso-butanol) or an alkane (n-heptane, iso-octane, or n-octane) with butyl-vinyl ether or iso-butyl-vinyl ether.…”
