“…The normal plasma aldosterone level in the preoperative period in this case is in line with the findings of almost normal preoperative plasma aldosterone levels observed in DOC (Powell-Jackson et al, 1974;Kondo et al, 1976;Davies et al, 1980) or B (Fraser et al, 1968;Mills et al, 1980) producing adrenal tumor reported previously. We could not examine the aldosterone content and/or histological view of the adjacent adrenal tissue, but the basal aldosterone release from it in this case was much less than that in control adrenal tissue, although it was far more than that in tumor tissue.…”

“…Adrenocortical tumors producing DOC (Powell-Jackson et al, 1974;Davies et al, 1980;Kondo et al, 1976) or B (Fraser et al, 1968;Mills et al, 1980), either malignant (Powell-Jackson et al, 1974;Davies et al, 1980;Fraser et al, 1968) or benign (Kondo et al, 1976;Mills et al, 1980), have been documented as hypermineralocorticoidism other than hyperaldosteronism. All these patients had severe hypertension and hypopotassemia.…”

“…However, at concentrations of 100 ng/dl or greater, such as might be anticipated in patients with 17-hydroxylase deficiency (2,4) or certain forms of Cushing's syndrome (43,44), deoxycorticosterone should produce marked sodium-retaining activity. Consistent with this, plasma deoxycorticosterone concentrations in the 100-500 ng/dl range are occasionally observed in patients with adrenal carcinoma who show hypertension and hypokalemia (41,43). A further indication that our procedure for measuring competitive activity can detect deoxycorticosterone when it is present in sufficient concentration to exhibit marked clinical effects is our finding (unpublished) that marked elevations of competitor activity are found in plasma after administration of large dosages of deoxycorticosterone (20 mg/day) to patients.…”

“…Of particular interest in this regard is deoxycorticosterone. In normals, the plasma deoxycorticosterone concentration is around 7-10 ng/dl or 0.2-0.3 nM (17,41,42). Concentrations of this steroid in the 20-100 ng/dl range have been reported in low-renin essential hypertension (17).…”
