Excess Deaths associated with the COVID-19 Pandemic in Ukraine in 2020

Abstract: COVID-19 related mortality has been understudied in Ukraine. As part of a World Bank project, we estimated excess mortality in Ukraine during 2020. Data on all deaths registered in government-controlled Ukraine from 2016-2020 (N=2,946,505) were utilized. We predicted deaths in 2020 by five-year age groups, sex, and month and calculated the number of deaths that deviated from expected levels (excess deaths). We compared excess deaths with the number of recorded COVID-19 deaths on death certificates and with pub… Show more

“…The estimated excess mortality was 10, 525 for the entire year. Such findings 90,91 are comparable with the results presented in this manuscript for the year 2020. In particular, the first estimate is comparable to estimates from nonparametric (32,569) and parametric ARIMA (31,123) and ARIMA & 65+ (35,726) models.…”

“…The other available Ukrainian manuscripts focused on COVID-19-specific incidence, mortality and genetics 9,24,[84][85][86] , vaccinations 31 , environmental factors 87 and other COVID-19 aspects 22,88,89 . The only discovered works about the excess mortality in Ukraine were two works for the year 2020 90,91 . In the first work 90 (written in English) the authors used a linear regression modeling framework without temporal dependence and the monthly index as a predictor.…”
