With the large number of partially or completely visually impaired persons in society, their integration as productive, educated and capable members of society is hampered heavily by a pervasively high level of braille illiteracy. This problem is further compounded by the fact that braille printers are prohibitively expensive-generally starting from two thousand US dollars, beyond the reach of the common man. Over the period of a year, the authors have tried to develop a Braille printer which attempts to overcome the problems inherent in commercial printers. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to introduce two prototypes-the first with an emphasis of cost-effectiveness, and the second prototype, which is more experimental and aims to eliminate several demerits of Braille printing. The first prototype has been constructed at a cost significantly less than the existing commercial Braille printers. Both the prototypes of the device have been constructed, which will be shown.

There is overwhelming empirical evidence for the influence of genetic factors in the etiology of schizophrenic psychoses. An appreciable and still increasing number of exogenous factors have been known for decades that are capable of inducing psychoses that present as "schizophrenia" or are more or less similar to it. In this article, genetic disorders--chromosomal abnormalities and Mendelian diseases--are summarized that may be associated with such psychoses. These disorders frequently but not necessarily exhibit additional physical symptoms. Although the majority of schizophrenic psychoses can so far not be explained by exogenous factors or well-defined genetic disorders, the proportion of these etiologies among all cases may be higher than presumed so far, because they evade detection. Data from the literature are discussed in the light of Karl Bonhoeffer's early concept of exogenous reaction types and modern medical genetics.

I have chosen as the subject for my Blake Marsh Lecture the influence of sex chromosome aberrations on intelligence, mental health and social adjustment. This subject provides a fascinating example of how a branch of research, beginning in the field of mental retardation, arrived at discoveries which proved to be of significance to quite other fields of psychiatry. Ten years ago we learned that sex-chromatin-positive males, that is, males with additional X chromosomes, at least in some cell lines, were more often encountered among the intellectually retarded than among the average population of males. Shortly after this we learned that the same was true of women with double Barr bodies, that is, women with more than the usual two X chromosomes, at least in some cell lines. Today we have facts showing that an abnormal sex chromosome complement may have an unfavourable effect on mental health, and this in several different ways; thus we know that it may contribute to the development of functional psychoses, and may even influence such a complex variable of behaviour as our ability to adapt ourselves to the laws of the community. Myself, I am convinced that study of aberrations in the sex chromosomes will prove to have a radical effect on large sections of psychiatric thinking.
