Exceptional visuospatial imagery in schizophrenia; implications for madness and creativity

Abstract: Biographical and historical accounts suggest a link between scientific creativity and schizophrenia. Longitudinal studies of gifted children indicate that visuospatial imagery plays a pivotal role in exceptional achievements in science and mathematics. We asked whether visuospatial imagery is enhanced in individuals with schizophrenia (SZ). We compared SZ and matched healthy controls (HC) on five visuospatial tasks tapping parietal and frontoparietal functions. Two aspects of visuospatial transformation, spati… Show more

“…Barta et al [47] observed that PS deviated further to the right with respect to the control group when they (1) bisected lines placed on the right side of the page and (2) when they used the right hand and the direction of scanning was from right to left. The presence of a rightward bias was subsequently confirmed by Rao et al [48] and Benson and Park [49]. Also in the study by Rao et al [48] participants used the left or right hand.…”

“…Barnett [47] found that individuals with greater overall negative symptomatology made greater rightward deviations in right hemispace. Furthermore, Benson and Park [49] observed that the magnitude of right deviations was strongly related to delusional ideation.…”

“…For all of the individual B-BODI pictures, we predicted that participants with schizophrenia would endorse significantly more items, and also score higher on frequency, distress, and vividness (intensity) as a result of having these experiences more often (contributing to the frequency score), feeling as if they were stressful (contributing to the distress score), and imagining them more vividly (e.g., based on the findings of enhanced imagery in individuals with schizophrenia; Benson & Park, 2013; contributing to the vividness score). The same hypothesis and predictions were made for individuals at increased risk for schizophrenia compared to those at lower risk.…”
