Excellent Durability of Substoichiometric Titanium Oxide As a Catalyst Support for Pd in Alkaline Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells

Abstract: In this study, substoichiometric titanium oxide, Ti n O 2n−1 , was compared with carbon black and TiO 2 in the role of catalyst supports for Pd in alkaline direct ethanol fuel cell. 10%Pd/C, 10% Pd/commercial TiO 2 and 10%Pd/Ti n O 2n−1 catalysts were successfully prepared by a polyol method. The supports and electrocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and chronoampero… Show more

“…Thus, we investigated their behavior using LSV measurement in the same system, but without EG presence ( Figure S10 (Supplementary Information)), and results revealed the absence of anodic peak in all cases. It should be mentioned that obtained results are in good agreement with literature where Pd-based materials showed superior photo-electrocatalytic activity for EG oxidation at alkaline conditions comparing to their analogues using Pt nanoparticles [9,40]. On the other hand, it is well known that Pt-based electrocatalysts exhibit an excellent performance for EG oxidation in acidic media [41].…”

“…During the last decade, growing attention has been paid to direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) for portable electronic devices because of their easy storage and transportation characters [4,5]. As an alcoholic fuel, ethanol has the following advantages: 1) major renewable bio-fuel from the biomass fermentation 2) low toxicity compared to methanol, and 3) facile electro-kinetics property in alkaline media [6,7]. The efficient electrocatalysts should be developed for the complete ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in the direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs), due to the requirement of CeC bond breaking and the formation of poisoning intermediates.…”

“…A support material is generally used for the dispersion of catalyst particles to prevent the detachment of metal particles from the support and aggregation caused by corrosion of the support. TiO 2 , which has high stability and is commercially available, shows good potential as a support for fuel cells 14, 15. However, direct deposition of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on TiO 2 surfaces does not give uniform deposition 16.…”
