Examining what Mental Toughness, Ego Resiliency, Self-efficacy, and Grit measure: An exploratory structural equation modelling bifactor approach

Abstract: Despite conceptual similarities among the established non-cognitive constructs of Mental Toughness, Ego Resiliency, Self-efficacy, and Grit, preceding research typically considered these as adversary rather than complementary and potentially additive. Subsequently, comparatively few studies have examined these together. This paper, via two independent studies, examined commonality within Mental Toughness, Ego Resiliency, Self-efficacy, and Grit. This identified key elements that contribute to a broad, non-cogn… Show more

“…These findings concerning savouring art are in line with the well‐documented positive connection between openness to experiences and mental well‐being (Strickhouser et al, 2017). More recent studies have presented evidence of correlation between openness to experience, self‐efficacy, and grit (De La Cruz et al, 2021; Denovan et al, 2022; Ekinci et al, 2021). In a complementary way to most of the studies that focused on the actual consumption of art – art engagement – the current study focused on savouring art as a personal characteristic, at the end of a period when art engagement was not possible due to COVID‐19.…”

“…However, there are also some reported differences. For example, resilience is also often described in terms of how people react when facing difficult circumstances, whereas mental toughness has an additional proactive feature of the ability to thrive in situations where there are positive effects (Denovan et al, 2022). Mental toughness also allows the study of several psychological attributes simultaneously, providing an opportunity to understand the different relationships between these psychological attributes and outcomes (e.g., St Clair‐Thompson & McGeown, 2019).…”

“…This classification acknowledges that attributes fall outside the domain of cognitive aptitude tests (i.e., intelligence scales) [ 14 , 15 ]. Some theorists conceptualise non-cognitive skills as a mindset or allied beliefs that shape how individuals make sense of the world [ 16 ].…”

“…Some theorists conceptualise non-cognitive skills as a mindset or allied beliefs that shape how individuals make sense of the world [ 16 ]. The term non-cognitive, however, is misrepresentative to the extent that these skills indirectly draw upon perceptive processes [ 14 , 15 ]. From a performance perspective, MT manifests as the capacity to thrive in difficult situations and manage adversity (i.e., actively approach, respond to, and appraise demanding conditions).…”
