Examining the Reaction Times of International Level Badminton Players Under 15

Abstract: This research was conducted to examine the simple visual and auditory reaction times of badminton players of the national teams and to examine the possible effects of reaction-time average values of badminton players under the age of 15 who participated in the fifth International Rumi Child Sport Games. In total, 48 players (male = 24; female = 24) from six countries (Turkey, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Georgia) participated in the study. Stature, bodyweight, BMI, dominant and non-dominant hand vi… Show more

“…Because competition in sports games takes place in environments varying for space and time an important aspect is quick flow of information, focusing, anticipation, predicting movement of the opponent and the ability to quickly move around the court under circumstances of a sports competition [15]. Thus psychomotor abilities, including reaction time can play a key role and lead to victory [9,15,18,19,20]. This thesis is confirmed by research conducted by Yüksel & Tunç [20], who evaluated the reaction time of a 45-person group of badminton players taking part in the 5th International Sport Games of Rumia.…”

“…Considering the height of the badminton net from the ground (152-155 cm), it can be stated that all of the players participated in the research were far higher than the height of the net, which did not affect the success. The fact that the height of the subject group in the research was higher than the net, was supported by numerous similar researches with regards to the higher height of the badminton players than the net (Chow, Chen & Lin, 2016;Masu & Nagai, 2016;Middleton, Bishop, Smith & Gee, 2016;Vicen et al, 2012;Yüksel & Tosun Tunç , 2018). Body weight has an important role in badminton, since it requires leaping up the body numerous times from the ground despite gravity.…”

“…As was emphasized in the Introduction section, the problem of the effect of neurophysiological abilities on the level of achievement in the training of badminton players has been little explored to date. badminton is one of the fastest racket sports, with maximum shuttlecock flight speed reaching over 400 km/h [1,23,24]. Therefore, players are challenged with high requirements in the following areas: flexibility of nervous processes, divisibility of and alternating attention, precision of performance of activities in time and space, making appropriate decisions in response to competitive pressure, anticipating the opponent's actions, and performing effective counteractions [25,26].…”

“…Interesting research was also done into the differences in reaction times between men and women of national teams of Turkey, Azerbaijan, bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, and Georgia [24]. In men and women, statistically significant differences between individual countries were demonstrated in the level of visual reaction time for the dominant and non-dominant limb.…”
