Examining the psychometric properties of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 in Brazilian adolescents

Abstract:             This study examined the psychometric properties of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) in Brazilian adolescents. The sample was comprised of 438 boys (Mage = 15.50, SDage = 1.20) and 402 girls (M = 15.51, SDage = 1.18). Confirmatory factor analyses supported a one-dimensional and partially invariant across-gender and weight status factor structure. The instrument showed adequate internal consistency and temporal stability over a two-week period. Body appreciation was negatively correlated… Show more

“…This assumption was confirmed. Overlapping findings from the previous studies, this study demonstrated that boys report greater body appreciation compared to girls [20][21][22]. In line with previous studies, we found gender differences of negative body image in the expected direction, with females demonstrating greater body image concerns compared to boys [70].…”

“…This is somewhat surprising considering that adolescence is a critical period in the development of positive and negative body image. Nevertheless, some rare studies on adolescents have replicated findings in adults, concluding that adolescent body appreciation is inversely associated with body dissatisfaction, drive for thinness, sociocultural beauty ideals internalisation and social physique anxiety, and is positively associated with life satisfaction, self-esteem, physical well-being and intuitive eating [20][21][22][23]. Understanding the protective nature of positive body image is important to more deeply investigate the associations between positive body image and a health-related lifestyle, especially participation in physical activity and sports [12,24].…”

“…This is accompanied by an increase in studies assessing the psychometric properties of body image measurements in different cultures and languages. Indeed, several instruments have been successfully translated to Spanish or Portuguese to assess inter alia body dissatisfaction (Castrillón Moreno et al, 2007), body checking/avoidance (Kachani et al, 2011; Campana et al, 2013) and positive body image (Swami et al, 2011; Alcaraz-Ibáñez et al, 2017) in Latin America.…”

“…The other two psychological variables played lesser roles in body appreciation than we had expected: satisfaction with life was positively but relatively weakly related, and optimism even less so. Previous studies reported stronger connections with these variables ( Alcaraz-Ibáñez et al, 2017 ; Frisén & Holmqvist, 2010 ; Wood-Barcalow et al, 2010 ). While bidirectional associations between body appreciation and these two variables were relatively stronger, in multiple regression analyses their role became weaker.…”

“…In quantitative studies with adults, body appreciation has also been found to be positively correlated with self-esteem and positive affect and negatively correlated with negative psychological indicators, such as guilt or shame ( Razmus & Razmus, 2017 ). Several quantitative studies have also found body appreciation to be positively associated with satisfaction with life among youth ( Alcaraz-Ibáñez, Cren Chiminazzo, Sicilia, & Teixeira Fernandez, 2017 ).…”
