Examining the kinetics of the thermal polymerisation behaviour of epoxy resins initiated with a series of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium based ionic liquids

Abstract: An epoxy resin based on the difunctional diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) is reacted thermally in the presence of a series of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium based ionic liquids comprising the common cation (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium) and an anion (acetate, dicyanamide, or thiocyanate). Dynamic differential scanning calorimetry was used to analyse the formulations comprising DGEBA and the ionic liquid where it was revealed that the lowest and highest temperature for the onset of reaction were observed for form… Show more

“… 33 and Binks et al 78 As an example, one can mention ionic liquid with imidazolium-based cation for which the reported activation energy is E a = 19 kJ/mol. 33 Moreover, the activation barriers E a = 72.7 and 72.4 kJ/mol estimated for curing DGEBA with [(MOB)IM][Sal] are in perfect agreement with the respective value for the system reported in ref ( 78 ) (where E a = 74 kJ/mol). As shown, the values of E a are closely connected to the applied monomers, which also affect the dominant curing mechanism.…”

“…Our previous publications [23,24] highlighted the importance of the acidic hydrogen atom and the role of the anion in combination with the cation when employed as initiators for the polymerisation of epoxies. Several different reaction pathways have been proposed for the initiation reaction with a di-epoxy is proposed to occur via a carbene route, an imidazole route or a nucleophilic route (Fig.…”

“…Imidazoles and their derivatives have been widely used as either the curing accelerators or main curing agents owing to their efficient activity for initiating the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of epoxy resins, along with the expected mechanical performance and insulating property of the cured resins . The curing mechanism of imidazoles/epoxy resins system is rather complex and has been reported a lot previously . It is now generally acknowledged that pyridine‐type nitrogen and pyrrole‐type nitrogen are crucial to curing reaction.…”
