Examining the economic impact of COVID-19 in India through daily electricity consumption and nighttime light intensity

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted economic activity in India. Adjusting policies to contain transmission while mitigating the economic impact requires an assessment of the economic situation in near real-time and at high spatial granularity. This paper shows that daily electricity consumption and monthly nighttime light intensity can proxy for economic activity in India. Energy consumption is compared with the predictions of a consumption model that explains 90 percent of the variation in normal times. Energ… Show more

“…A growing body of literature has used high-frequency data (HFD), such as electricity consumption [ 8 , 9 ], air pollution [ 5 , 10 , 11 ], night-time light intensity [ 12 ] and human mobility [ 13 15 ], to track the evolution of the pandemic on a country and global scale. In addition, recent research has used HFD sources to quantify the effect of individual NPI on domestic economic output [ 5 , 8 , 14 ].…”

“…However, although several authors recently analyzed the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic ( Beyer et al, 2021 , McCloskey and Heymann, 2020 , Fernandes, 2020 , McKibbin and Fernando, 2020 ; Nicola, Alsafi, Shorabi, Kerwan, Al-Jabir, Losifidis, Agha & Agha, 2020), only a few of them have studied public strategies to rescue the tourism and hospitality industry within different countries ( Androniceanu, 2020 , McCartney, 2020 ). The main contribution of our research is therefore to explore the public intervention measures implemented for the tourism and hospitality sector and the local regional responses to this global pandemic crisis in the context of the European Union.…”

“…Furthermore, we have been able compare the estimates in mobility against those derived from the CDR data in the period of time analyzed [ 27 ]. Other approaches to assess the economic impact of the pandemic use electric consumption as a proxy [ 35 ].…”
